TIRKŠLIAI

County : Telšiai
Municipality : Mažeikiai

Arms (crest) of Tirkšliai
Official blazon
Lithuanian blazon wanted
English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on June 21, 2004.

The charge is related to the shrine in the centre of the town: on three sides of it there are 5 red hearts.
Two local legends exist about that shrine:

  1. it is built in 1667 by local landlady Vazinskiene for the memory of her son tortured by the Swedes
  2. it is built by local landlord Vazinskis for the memory of his servant tortured by the Swedes but who did not reveal the hiding place of the landlord's wife Vazinskiene and her 4 children.

Historians say the shrine is built in 1867 for the memory of the uprising in 1863 and of its insurgents.

All together, these hearts symbolize love, courage and fidelity.
