Arms of Tønder

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted in 1922 and continued in 1970 and 2007.

The arms are based on the oldest seal of the city, known since 1443, but probably dating from the mid 13th century. Until the 15th century the city was an important harbour, now the connection to the sea is sanded.

The present arms show a 17th century ship, not the original medieval ship.
