Origin/meaning

These arms have been officially granted on 29th July 1996.

The arms, quarterly, show the chequy Or and Gules taken from the arms of the Tàrrega family, lords of the local castle (11^th century), and the royal arms of Catalonia-Aragon (four pales Gules on Or): the city was linked to the royal House of Barcelona since its origins, and in 1522 passed definitively to the Crown. The two-headed eagle is probably a privilege granted to the council by the count-king Charles I the Emperor.
