STEVENSTON

Incorporated into : 1975 Cunninghame (1996 North Ayrshire)

Arms (crest) of Stevenston

Official blazon

Argent, a shakefork between a lozenge Sable in chief, a billet Or, enflamed Gules, in the dexter, and in the sinister a heart of the Last within a fetterlock Azure.

Below the Shield which is ensigned by a coronet appropriate to a Burgh is placed in an Escrol this Motto "To Spread Her Conquests Farther".

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on December 23, 1952.

Stevenston became a Burgh in 1952.

The arms show the black shakefork of Cunninghame on its silver field, since Stevenston is in that district of Ayrshire; the shakefork also denotes the agricultural interests of the area.

The black lozenge is for coal-mining, the flaming billet for the I.C.I. (Nobel) works at Ardeer nearby, and the Lockhart padlocked heart recalls Stephen de Loccard.

The motto comes from Robert Burns' song "Bonny Lesley", which he wrote in honour of Miss Lesley Baillie, daughter of Robert Baillie, of Mayville, Stevenston.
