The mermaid was chosen in 1958 as an appropriate symbol for the municipality, which is an important tourist area along the Millstätt Lake, the second largest lake in Carinthia. The symbol itself was probably based on a figurehead on a large tourist tourboat from the early 1950s. | |||
The mermaid holds a small shield with the arms of the Counts of Ortenburg, the oldest known rulers of the area, who owned a large part of the current municipality in medieval times. They also built the Sommeregg castle in 1187, which they owned until 1418. | |||

Origin/meaning
