Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on June 6, 1962.

These arms are based on the old seal of the Marquisate of Rode, known since 1717. The main shield shows the arms of Robrecht van Cassel, second son of Robrecht of Béthune, Count of Flanders, who acquired the 17 parishes in the Rode area between 1320 and 1331. His seals showed the lion of Vlaanderen with a bordure. The colours are already known from a roll of arms in Turin from 1312. The arms also appear in the Armorial Gelre in the 14th century.

The banner shows the arms of the Rodriguez de Evora y Vega family, Lords of the area since 1602 and from 1682-1799 promoted to Marquises of Rode.

The arms were, however, not granted in the proper historical colours. The borudre in the main shield should be red, not black, and the figures on the banner should face the other direction. This was corrected in the arms of the new Merelbeke municipality, which adopte dthe Schelderode arms.
