Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on April 10, 1936.

In the 14th century the Byzantine rulers divided the island of Sardinia in four kingdoms, call Judicates; Torres (arms: a tower, a canting element), Gallura (arms: a rooster, also a canting element), Arborea (with a canting tree, arbor-tree) and Calaris (whose arms are unknown). Sassari was the capital of the Judicate of Torres and Torres was also its name as a town. So, the tower appearing in the quarters repeats the arms of the Judicate of Torres; the cross is a modification of the arms of Savoya, the Italian royal dynasty.
