Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on May 31, 1994.

The arms are canting: the red cross with twelve acorns comes from the coat of arms of the noble Portuguese family of Bulhoes, whose most distinguished member was St. Anthony of Lisbon (also known as of Padua) patron saint of the city and the trefoils are the emblem of good fortune, evoking the day when the settlers met with the place where they were to build their homes; the bees are the symbol of work and tenacity.

The supporters show that sugar cane and orange are important agricultural products of the region and the railroad track alludes to the Estrada de Ferro Noroeste (North-west Railroad) and its contribution to the development of the region.

The shield is surmounted by a mural crown appropriate to a city and a scroll below the shield bears the name of the city.
