Origin/meaning

Salerno was founded in 194 BC. It was a relatively unimportant city until the 17^th century. The arms show in the upper part St. Matthew, the patron saint, whose bones were brought to Salerno in 954. The lower part is taken from the arms of Naples-Sicily.
