Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1925.

Although the name Salacgrīva is very naturally understandable as "Salacas griva" ("mouth of Salaca river"), but historically it comes from the Saletsa ("salt river") - a Livonian name for the river and a fishing village at the river mouth. Later the bishop of Riga built a castle, Salismünde, and port here.

But the real development of Salacgrīva started in the middle of the 19th century, when a shipyard was established here. It became the largest seaport of Vidzeme, although it went down after establishment of the Ainazi port.

The arms symbolize the port in the river Salaca mouth.
