SAARLOUIS (SLS)

State : Saarland

Saarloui.kreis.jpg

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on February 1st, 1966.

The upper part of the arms show the arms of Hohenzollern and represent the fact that the area belonged directly to the German Empire from 1816-1919. The German emperors were of the Hohenzollern dynasty. The lower part shows the arms of Lorraine (now in France). Saarlouis was part of the Duchy of Lorraine from 1100-1766. The star represents the shape of the French fortress in the city of Saarlouis. The fleur-de-lis is taken from the arms of the city of Saarlouis.
