German In Blau, auf Felsen erbaut, rechts einen zweifach gezinnten Wartturm, links einen weißen Torturm, zwischen denselben die gezinnte weiße Stadtmauer, hinter welcher der obere Teil des weißen Rathauses emporragt, auf dessen Dachfirst das kurtrierische Landeswappen, in silbernem Schild ein rotes Kreuz, ruht.

Origin/meaning

The oldest seals of Saarburg date from the 14th century and already show a castle or fortress with a small shield with a cross. The castle indicates the importance of the city as one of the main fortresses of the State of Trier from 1059-1794. Saarburg received city rights in 1291.

The small shield shows the arms of the State of Trier. The base of the arms shows some waves, symbolising the Saar river.

All later seals and images show a similar composition, but the size and shape of the buildings varies widely during the centuries. Only in an album from 1910 quite different arms appear, see below.
