SØNDERJYLLAND

Region : Sydjylland
Additions : 1970 Haderslev, Sønderborg, Tønder, Åbenrå

Sonderjy.jpg

Origin/meaning :
The arms were granted in 1980, but have been used since 1245
The two blue lions are the historical arms of the Dukes of South Jylland, or Schleswig (see Schleswig-Holstein). The lions hold the Danish banner, to indicate that the region was a Danish possession. The region has been for many centuries disputed by the Danish Kings and the Dukes of Schleswig(-Holstein) (later by the Kings of Prussia), hence the importance of the banner at the time.
