Origin/meaning

The arms were devised in 1908 but not officially granted until July 31, 1974.

The arms are derived from the arms of the Lords of Runkel, the oldest known rulers of the village. The family built in 1159 a castle near the village and granted the city rights in 1315. The family became extinct in the late 14th century. The city used the arms in it seals at least since the 15th century.
