Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted in 1959.

The arms are based on the seal of the city from 1427, which was made after the extension of the city rights in 1403 by Bishop Johann III of Assel, bishop of Verden. The arms show a canting red castle and the cross of the Bishops of Verden. The other shield shows the arms of Johann of Assel himself.
