Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on August 20, 1900.

The arms show a city gate and a wavy base for the -bach (brook, stream) part of the name. The gate is closed to indicate that the city was not conquered during the Hussite Wars. The small shield shows the arms of the Lords von Gersdorf (see 396a.wsa.jpg), who ruled the city between 1380-19th century, with only a few interruptions.

The arms were designed between 1896 and 1900. The city has used a number of arms and variations of designs during the centuries, so it was not clear what the actual arms were. Hence the city council established a committee in 1896 to design proper arms. The result are the arms shown above.

The seals until around 1500 only showed the arms of the Lords von Gerdsorf, later seals showed quartered arms and different gates and/or castles.
