Origin/meaning :
The arms were granted in 1973.

The town was founded as a whaling station, which is symbolised by the whale in the lower part of the arms. In the village there is also the Arctic Institute, which performs scientific research of geological, geophysical and other phenomena. One of the main objects is the northern lights, which is symbolised in the upper part of the arms.
