Origin/meaning
The combination of a lion killing a fish already appeared on the earliest seal of the city, dating from the 14th century. Until the 16th century the composition was shown without a shield on the seal, but since the 16th century the composition is used as arms of the city. The size and shape of the animals, as well as the colours have differed during the centuries, but the basci composition did not change. The origin or meaning of the lion and the fish unfortunately are not known.
