Arms of Piltene (town)

Official blazon

Dalīts: 1. - sarkanā laukā divi krustoti sudraba bīskapa zižļi, virs tiem zelta bezants, 2. - sudraba laukā trīs sarkani torņi ar tādiem pašiem karodziņiem.

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1925.

In 1309 the bishop of Kurzeme built the Pilten castle here. Later the capital of the Kurzeme diocese was transferred to Piltene.
In 1557 city rights and arms were granted. The arms showed the city walls in the upper part and two crossed crosiers in the lower part.

In the 17th century the city revived again and got new arms: three towers, see the seal below.

Later authorities decided to join old and new arms to one: the crossed crosiers in the upper half and three towers in the lower half. These were first used in the early 19th century. The arms were officially granted in 1925.
