Origin/meaning
The town became a possession of the Margraves of Brandenburg-Bayreuth in 1665 and the oldest seal dates from the same time. It showed already the above arms, which are a combination of the eagle of Brandenburg and the quartered shield of the Hohenzollern family, Margraves of Brandenburg-Bayreuth. The arms remained unchanged until the 19th century, when the city became part of Bayern. The black quarteres were changed into blue (the Bavarian colours) and the eagle was made black. During the 19th century different colours were used for the eagle and quartering, but the historical colours were restored in the early 20th century.
