OŁAWA

Province: Dolny Śląsk
County: Oława

Origin/meaning

Already the oldest seals of the town (German name Ohlau), known since 1334, show the rooster as arms. The meaning is not known. On some seals the rooster was standing on an eel, probably symbolising the Ołava river. This image was again shown as the town arms in the 1960s.

Until the 1990s the arms were always show with the rooster facing right, only the present arms show the rooster facing left. I have no information why this has been changed.
