The quartering of the shield indicates the four villages in the municipality; Newel, Beßlich, Butzweiler and Lorich. The eagle head is taken as a symbol for Butzweiler, which belonged to the Abbey of St. Mary, the other three villages were possessions of the Archbishops of Trier, which is symbolised by the red cross in base. | |||

The arms were officially granted on June 9, 1986.
