Wappen von Neustadt an der Orla

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The combination of the three towers and the eagle already appeared on the seal of the city from 1403. The meaning of the eagle is not clear, it has been explained as a canting element for the Orla river (Orla can be translated as eagle-stream), or the Arnshaugk (eagle's nest) castle. The eagle has also been explained as a symbol for the medieval Pfalz Sachsen, which used a gold eagle on a blue field as its arms. The three towers are a symbol for the city itself.

The small shield shows the arms of the Counts of Meissen, indicating that the city at the time was a possession of the Counts of Sachsen(-Meissen).
