In Rot eine silberne Fabrikanlage mit fünf Schloten, darunter ein silberner Schwan mit goldener Halskrone; über ihm schwebend ein silbernes Nesselblatt.

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on May 13, 1930.

Neumünster was founded around the 'new abbey' in 1130. In 1870 it became a city. The arms are a combination of the modern city (industry) and its history (swan and Nesselblatt). The swan is the symbol of the Stormarn, to which Neumünster belonged. The Nesselblatt (nettle-leaf) is the old symbol of the counts of Holstein. Already in the early 19th century industry developed in the city, mainly leather and textile industries. Before 1930 the city used as arms only the swan and nettle-leaf, as shown by Hupp in the 1920s, see below.
