NATIONAL ARMS OF BURUNDI
Origin/meaning
Burundi became an independent Kingdom in 1962 and adopted arms with a lion's head. The shield was placed on two spears and two branches and on top a drum was placed. The translation of the motto "Ganza Sabwa" I don't know. These arms are shown below:
In 1966 Burundi became a republic and the arms were changed to the arms shown above. The lion head remained, but only the spears remained. The new motto 'Unité, Travail, Progrès' means Unity, Labour, Progress.
