Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1940 and confirmed on April 16, 1974.

Monschau was granted city rights in 1352. The arms show the small shield of the Lords of Schönforst, who were appointed vassals over Monschau in 1354. When the city became a possession of Jülich in 1435 the lion of Jülich was added.

The arms are based on a seal from around 1600. Older seals show a King holding a church.
