Administrative division

Mexico is divided into States. The United Mexican States are a federation of 31 free and sovereign states, which form a union that exercises a degree of jurisdiction over the Federal District and other territories.

The states are divided into municipalities, the smallest administrative political entity in the country, governed by a mayor or municipal president (presidente municipal), elected by its residents by plurality.

Heraldry

All States and many municipalities use some form of coat of arms. Most of these are very different from the European heraldry, using lots of (landscape) elements in a single shield.

Coats of arms of municipalities

Be aware : municipalities starting with a prefix El, La and Los and L' are listed under the second name, for exampe El Salto is listed under S.
