Origin/meaning
The arms were granted May 24, 1909 and were based on a map of the city from 1617 which showed the arms.
The arms show quartered the arms of Trier and the symbol of Lorraine. Merzig was ruled as a condominium between the bishops of Trier (see Rheinland-Pfalz) and the Dukes of Lorraine. The arms of Lorraine show three eagles on a bend (see the arms of Saarland or the county Merzig-Werden), but as a minor symbol the so-call Cross-of-Lorraine was used since Duke Rene I (around 1435).
The seals of the city did not show the arms, but the patron saint, St. Peter. In an 1910 album a golden eagle on a blue field was shown for the city. The origin thereof is not known.
