Origin/meaning

Mataró, a city of Roman origin (it was named Iluro), was born around the castle of Mata. In the 15^th century it passed to the royal jurisdiction (this fact is shown by the royal arms of Catalonia-Aragon, four pales Gules on Or). The distinctive and traditional arms of the city are canting: a hand holding a "mata" (Catalan for "bunch").

These arms are not official, but widely used by the local council, since at least 1619.
