MARTHALEN

Canton : Zürich

Wappen von Marthalen/Arms (crest) of Marthalen

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on December 30, 1934.

The arms show an oak tree, symbolising the forests in the municipality. This composition was chosen from a number of proposals made in the early 1930s. The first proposal combined elements from the arms of the locally important families Waldkirch and Peyer, in the colours of the Von Rheinau (Ortenaukreis)|Rheinau arms. The second proposal was based on an image in a manuscript from 1740 and showed some tools used in wine-making. A third showed a bracelet and a fourth an arrow, but all were rejected by the local council.
In the 19th century the village arms showed a non-heraldic view of the village.
