Heraldry of the World Civic heraldry of Germany - Deutsche Wappen (Gemeindewappen/Kreiswappen) |
MANNHEIM (MA)
State : Baden-Württemberg
Incorporated into : 1973 Rhein-Neckar Kreis
Origin/meaning
The arms were granted in 1970.
The lion is the lion of the Pfalz, as the area belonged for many centuries to the principality of the Pfalz. The colours of the lion and the field are derived from the arms of the Wittelsbach family (see Bayern), Princes of the Pfalz. The key held by the lion symbolises the small part of the district that historically belonged to the diocese and State of Worms.
