Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on ??

I have no information on the origin/meaning of these arms. Any information is welcome !

The previous arms were officially granted in 1908, but are based on a seal from 1325.

The arms show in the upper part St. Martin, the patron saint of the city, and of the State of Mainz, to which the city historically belonged.

The wheel in the lower part is also derived from the arms of Mainz. The oldest seal of the city, known since 1277, as well as a seal from 1300 both show only the wheel. All later seals show the present combination, but sometimes the wheel is also shown as the typical double-wheel of Mainz.
