Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1925.

Before the German invasion Limbazi, called then Lemesele, was a center of Metsepole, one of largest lands of the Livonian people.
In the 13th century the archbishop of Riga built the castle Lemsal here, around which the town developed. In 1385 city rights were granted. The seal showed saint Lawrence, see below the seal from 1418.

In the 17th century the Swedes took the town, and the Swedish King Gustav Adolph granted it to Riga. The new arms were granted: a city gate with lion's head, according to the arms of Riga. A crosier, cross and head were added to note that the town was bishop's property earlier.

After the independence of Latvia the bishop's head was removed. In 1925 the present arms were confirmed.
