Origin/meaning

These arms have been officially granted on 26th October 1987.

The municipality comprises the originary territory of the viscounty of Bas (the arms show the viscount's crown), that since the 14th century has been ruled by the Cabrera family.

These arms show the complexity of the municipality: the first quarter is for Sant Privat d'en Bas (represented by the castle of El Mallol and the chapel of Sant Just, on a hill; this castle was the centre of the viscounty of Bas); Sant Esteve d'en Bas is on the second quarter (it shows a goat -"cabra" in Catalan-, the canting arms of the Cabreras, lords of the village and the whole valley); Joanetes is on the third quarter (it's symbolized by a mitre, a staff and a palm, the attributes of St. Romà -or Romanus-, the patron saint of the village); finally, the fourth quarter is for La Pinya (canting arms: in Catalan this village means "the pine cone", and because of this the arms show a pine and two pine cones).
