The arms were granted in 1651 by Voit von Salzburg, bishop of Bamberg. He also granted the supporters, helmet and crest of his personal arms to the arms. These were abolished in 1819, but still sometimes used in the 20<sup>th</sup> century.

The roses are taken from the older seals of the city, which showed three roses since 1391. The laurel branch symbolises the bravery and the victory over the Swedish Army in the Thirty-years War. The two crowns are canting symbols.
