Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted in 1931, changed on January 22, 1938 and again on July 3, 1950.

Krefeld historically had not been granted arms, the city used the image of the patron saint, St. Dionysius, with in front of him the arms of Moers since the 14th century. Interestingly, the saint is often shown with his head in his arms ánd still on his neck. Normally the saint is shown beheaded and holding his head. As the city did not have official arms, there are a number of different arms
After the mergers in 1929 the city adopted arms with a combination of the arms of Krefeld and Uerdingen (keys).
After the merger in 1930, the new city adopted arms in 1931 with the old arms of Krefeld and Uerdingen combined per fess (=horizontally). In 1950 this was replaced by the combination per pale.
In 1938 the city received new arms, in which the saint was replaced by the small shield of Moers, as saints at the time were considered inappropriate. These arms were used until 1945, when the 1931 arms were again used. Only in 1950 the present arms were granted.
