The arms are based on the seal from 1694 from the Land van de Woestine, a large to which the village belonged and which forms a large part of the later municipality. The saltire is taken from the arms of the Praet family, who owne dthe estae until 1592.

The scallop, which appeared on the seal, is also taken from the crest of the family arms.
