Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted in 1938.

The two lions are the combined lions of Brabant and Limburg, as the town was a possession of the Dukes of Brabant.

The oldest seal which is known since 1306, showed the two lions in a quartered shield above a city wall. Later seals show only the patron saint, St.Martin. The tower in the new arms symbolises the Imperial castle built in the 12th century in the town.
