The arms were granted in 1925.

Kandava developed around the local castle, which is first time mentioned in 1231. In 1259 Germans took the control of the castle and land.
In the 17th century Kandava, called then Kandau in German, became an important administrative center of the Kurzeme dukedom. In 1710 the plague left no one inhabitant of the town.

Kandava revived in 19th century. In 1919 city rights were granted.

The arms were granted in 1925: an oak branch with three acorns - the symbol of unbreakable strength.
