Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on October 3, 1947.

The arms are based on the oldest seal of the city, which is known since 1247, but which is probably older. It is one of the oldest known seals in the Nordic countries.

The stars appear in the second known seal, dating from the end of the 13th century. The meaning of the stars is not known. They may be just decoration, to distinguish the arms from similar arms of other cities. They have also been referred to as the symbols for Castor and Pollux. All later seals and known arms of the city show the same composition, although the style has changed with the fashion of the time.
