KÖSTENBERG

State : Kärnten
District : Villach-Land
Incorporated into : 1973 Velden am Wörther See

Arms of Köstenberg

Official blazon

Goldenes, aufrecht sitzendes Eichhörnchen, rechts blickend, welches eine mit den Pfoten gehaltene goldene Nuss benagt, auf grünem Hintergrund.

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on June 15, 1960.

The squirrel is taken from the seals of the medieval Lords of Hohenwart, who owned the local castle. The first to use the squirrel on the seal was Chuntz (or Konrad) von Hohenwart in the 13th cnetury and the same design was used by the family until the 15th century. The colours were not known, the green colour was now chosen as a symbol for nature and agriculture.
