Origin/meaning

The first quarter refersa to the Franche-Comté region, where the bishop was born. The second quarter is based on the arms of the Grand-Seminary in Besançon, where he studied. The third is based on the arms of Thomas Gousset, Archbishop of Reims, who welcomed the prelate upon his departure from the diocese of Besançon. The 4th represents the arms of the church of Saint Jacques in Reims where the prelate was parish priest for many years.
