IRIG (Ириг)
Province : Vojvodina
District : Srem
Origin/meaning
The arms represents the Pelican In Her Piety. This is a heraldic device which represents sacrifice. In church heraldry it represents the Eucharist, which commemorates the supreme sacrifice of Jesus Christ. The arms were granted to Irig during the Napoleonic wars. Apparently the citizens of Irig were enthusiastic supporters of the Austrian crown and showed their support by generously buying war bonds. This was considered a sacrificial act and so the coat of arms representing Pelican In Her Piety was granted.
