The arms were granted in 1925.

Ilukste is first mentioned in 1562. In 1711 Ilukste, called then Illuxt in German, got market rights. In 1795 Kurzeme fell to the Russian Empire, and an administrative reform was performed. Ilukste became a district center.
In 1892 city rights were granted, confirmed in 1917.

The arms show a pranced horse. Ilukste was inhabited by Latvians and Lithuanians, and the horse is a highly adorable creature for people of both nationalities since the ancient times.
