Origin/meaning

The tree in the arms probably is an old tree-of-life (Lebensbaum) and is known as the symbol for Homburg since 1680. The oldest seal of Homburg dates from 1680 when the city was occupied by the French. The seal showed the tree and in a head three French fleur-de-lis. The next seal dates from around 1700 and shows a shield with the tree and two lions as supporters.

Homburg was returned to the Nassau-family and subsequently the fleur-de-lis were removed. In 1842, Homburg belonged to Bavaria at that time, the arms with the tree were first granted by King Lüdwig I. The arms were again granted in 1937 and finally on January 18, 1974.
