Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1966.

The arms are a combination of the arms of the two major parts of the area, the upper part are the arms of Franken (Franconia), the lower part the arms of Sachsen. The major part of the district belonged to the Bishops of Würzburg, who used the old arms of Franken. Part of the district was part of Sachsen-Coburg (the area around Königsberg) and became part of Bavaria in 1920.
