Origin/meaning

Hitzacker was founded as a city around 1260 and the oldest seal is known since 1289. The seal showed, as did nearly all later seals, already a city wall with three towers. The present arms, which were adopted in the early 20th century are based on the old seals. Even though the size and shape of the towers has changed considerably during the centuries (see below), the composition as such remained the same.
