Wappen von Hilsbach

Official blazon

(de)

Origin/meaning

The present arms were devised in 1898 and are based on the oldest seal.

The village belonged to the Pfalz and received city rights before 1294 by the Counts of the Pfalz. In the 14th century the city became a possession of the Counts of Öttingen, as vassals of the Pfalz. In 1803 Hilsbach became part of the Principality of Leiningen and in 1806 of Baden.

The arms show the arms of the Counts of the Pfalz, from the Wittelsbach family (see Bayern). The wavy bar is a canting element (Bach=stream). The combination already appears on the oldest seal of the city, which is known from 1475.

In the 18th and 19th century other arms appear on the seals of the city; showing in the upper half the diamonds and in the lower part a wavy bend.
