HENFIELD (Parish Council)

District : Horsham

Arms (crest) of Henfield

Official blazon

Arms : Argent on a Bend cottised between in chief two Keys in saltire the bows downward tied by a Cord and in base a Pelican in her Piety Gules three Bezants.
Crest : On a Wreath Argent and Gules upon the top of a Thorn Bush a Golden Oriole wings displayed and addorsed grasping with the dexter claw a Sprig of Thorn issuing from the bush and fructed at the top with two Berries all proper.
Motto: 'DOMINE SALVA NOS' - Lord save us

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on March 3, 1992.

The arms are based on those of the Bysshop family "Argent, on a bend cotised gules, three bezants". This family held the manor. On either side of the bend are are arranged crossed keys and a pelican in her piety. These represent the dedication of the Anglican and Catholic parish churches to Saint Peter and Corpus Christi respectively.

The crest shows a golden oriole and a thorn branch. This recalls the sighting of fourteen of these rare birds on Henfield Common in the early nineteenth century.

The motto - DOMINE SALVA NOS - means Lord Save Us.
