Origin/meaning

Heiligenstadt, or with the full name Heilbad Heiligenstadt, was a possession of the bishops of Mainz and was first mentioned in 973. It received city rights form bishop Siegfried II of Mainz in 1227. The seal shows Siegfried II riding on a horse in front of the new city. The shield and the banner shows the wheel of Mainz. The seal dates from the early 13th century and is still sometimes used.
